Creative Accountants for Artists, Studios & Content Businesses
Where creativity meets financial know-how. We handle the numbers so you can focus on the work.
Creative accountants are specialist advisers for people who earn from their imagination — musicians, actors, filmmakers, designers, writers, YouTubers and the studios behind them. Jungle Tax manages tax, royalties, bookkeeping and Creative Industry Tax Reliefs across the UK and US, so creatives at every stage keep more of what they earn and stay fully compliant.
Who do creative accountants work with?
The creative economy is broad, and so is our client base. We look after solo artists filing their first Self Assessment, established performers with global touring income, and the record labels, production companies and agencies that support them. If your income comes from creating, licensing or promoting original work, you sit within our world.
Creative earners rarely have a tidy monthly salary. Income arrives in bursts — an advance here, a royalty statement there, a brand deal, a festival fee, a residual payment months after a shoot. That irregularity makes budgeting, tax forecasting and cash flow far harder than for a typical employee, which is exactly why generalist accountants often get creative clients wrong.
Our specialists include accountants for the creative industry and dedicated film and TV accountants who speak the language of production budgets, call sheets and recoupment.
What tax reliefs can creative businesses claim?
The UK government actively rewards creative production. HMRC's Creative Industry Tax Reliefs support film, high-end and children's television, animation, video games, theatre, orchestras and museum or gallery exhibitions. From 1 January 2024, the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit and Video Games Expenditure Credit replaced several legacy schemes for many new productions, changing how relief is calculated and claimed.
These reliefs can turn a qualifying loss into a valuable cash credit, but the rules on qualifying expenditure, cultural certification and minimum UK spend are detailed. We assess eligibility, prepare robust claims and liaise with HMRC on your behalf. Explore our dedicated guide to Creative Industry Tax Reliefs for the current schemes.
In the US, creators access a different toolkit — qualified business income deductions, state film incentives, Section 179 expensing and R&D credits for genuinely innovative production technology. For clients earning across both countries, aligning UK and US claims without triggering double taxation is where real expertise pays off.
How are royalties and cross-border income handled?
Royalties are the lifeblood of many creative careers, and they are also one of the trickiest income streams to tax correctly. Payments can arrive from streaming platforms, publishers, collecting societies, sync licences and merchandising, often across multiple territories and currencies, each with its own withholding rules.
When a US platform pays a UK-based artist, tax can be withheld at source before the money ever reaches you. The US-UK double tax treaty exists to prevent that income being taxed twice, but you only benefit if the paperwork — such as a W-8BEN — is completed correctly and the credits are claimed on the right return. We track every stream, reconcile royalty statements and make sure treaty relief is applied.
For the accounting behind these income streams, see our royalties and revenue accounting service, and our cross-border tax planning for anyone earning on both sides of the Atlantic.

A finance partner who understands the creative life
We build long-term relationships with the artists, studios and content businesses we look after, learning how your income actually flows before we touch a single return. That context lets us plan around advances, royalties and irregular pay rather than forcing you into a generic template.

UK and US obligations handled under one roof
Creative careers rarely respect borders — royalties, tours and licensing deals can generate income and withholding across both the UK and the US at the same time. We coordinate HMRC and IRS reporting together so nothing slips between two systems.
By aligning treaty relief, foreign tax credits and reliefs on both sides, we help you avoid paying tax twice on the same earnings while staying fully compliant.

Questions & Answers
A creative accountant specialises in the finances of artists, performers, studios and content businesses. They understand irregular income, royalties, tour costs, self-employment and industry-specific reliefs. Rather than treating you like a generic sole trader, they structure your affairs around creative earning patterns so you keep more of what you make and stay compliant with HMRC and the IRS.
HMRC offers Creative Industry Tax Reliefs covering film, high-end TV, animation, children’s TV, video games, theatre, orchestra and museum exhibitions. From 1 January 2024 the new Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit and Video Games Expenditure Credit replaced several older schemes for many productions. Eligibility, qualifying spend and rates vary by scheme, so a specialist should confirm your position before you claim.
Royalties are usually taxable as income in the year you become entitled to them, and cross-border royalties may face withholding tax at source. The US-UK double tax treaty can reduce or eliminate that withholding and prevent the same income being taxed twice. Accurate tracking, treaty claims and correct reporting on both a UK return and a US 1040 are essential.
Yes. US citizens and green card holders are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so a musician or influencer based in London still files a US federal return. Tools such as the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, Foreign Tax Credit, FBAR and FATCA reporting apply. Missing filings can often be corrected through the IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures.
Generally yes, where costs are incurred wholly and exclusively for your creative work. Cameras, instruments, software, studio hire, agent fees, professional subscriptions and business travel are commonly deductible. Some capital items are relieved through capital allowances rather than as an outright expense. Keeping clear records and separating personal from business use is the key to defending every claim.
